Theme: love(sex, marriage), society (class, level), pride, woman (womanship), and, as the subtitle indicates, it is a history of French Revolution & France of 19th century. Tone: realistic (thus a work of realism, more specifically, the first “psychological novel”) , sober (stuff happened, that’s it), and poetic, but readable.
